Social Media

I have really enjoyed finally getting on and learning my way around Face Book. There have so many benefits that I have found for having a Face Book account that I can’t imagine not having this type of social media at my finger tips anymore. Not that I spend a whole lot of time on there but once a day I sign in and see what is going on with friends and family all over the country, and a few over seas. I still have a few things to learn that I am struggling with but with time I do believe I will have most of it under control.

Last night I spend some time online looking for folks that I used to work with at a large national insurance company back in the 90′s and I was surprised that I actually found a few that are on Face Book as well. The one guy that I really wanted to find again has a very unique name, so only took a few minutes to locate him. When I worked with him he was going to college to study law, working full time as a claims rep and being a single dad to a pretty little 3 year old, who is now a drop dead gorgeous 20 year old, according to the pictures on his Wall. He is now a hot shot lawyer in Washington D.C. working for a large well known international e-commerce law firm and doing very well for himself. Still not married, but living the life of Riley I would imagine. Making good money, living in the big city, tall, dark and handsome, heck ya.

All of the other folks that I found have not responded to my friend request yet. But I’m hoping that over the weekend they will sign on and see that I’m waiting to hear from them. I hope that they recognize my name after all of these years. I wish Face Book would let you send a comment along with their friend requests, that would save a lot of time, effort and possible trouble, if you know what I mean.

Don’t Call These Advertising Techniques ‘Old Fashioned’!

Well, okay – maybe you can. Certainly, none of these advertising techniques is going to turn into a screen featuring high-tech, specially created graphics, set to pulsing, contemporary music. But is that really such a bad thing? If these types of advertisements – like promotional pens – were no longer useful, well, they would no longer exist (much like horse-drawn carriages died out at the advent of automobiles), yet their effectiveness endures.

Word of Mouth

Word of mouth is one sure advertisement that easily slips between face-to-face communication and the digital version. From a friendly chat between friends over coffee to a lively debate on someone’s Facebook, getting positive recognition, the kind that drives people to try your service or product, is as easy and as free as making one customer happy and asking them to tell their friends. If you’ve performed well on your end, they will be happy to accommodate your request.

Print Ads

Whether you’re literally printing out an ad at home and posting it to your community bulletin board or taking out an ad in the newspaper, you are carrying on a tradition that is as old as commerce itself. Young or old, none of us can resist an attractive or interesting sign with a few well-chosen words, and while the circulation of newspapers has begun to decline, taking out an ad in the classifieds is still a tried-and-true method of getting attention.

Freebies

It’s quite possibly etched into human nature that we love free stuff, and your customers – or potential customers – are no different. The Pen Guy website will tell you that promotional pens are a thriving and effective way to spread your company’s name to all reaches of the world. And you can’t go wrong with other monogrammed goodies that people use, like key chains or water bottles.

Oh Canada

Since our 16 year old daughter (our youngest) has become fascinated by any and everything to do with Canada and keeps posting on Facebook things about Canada, my sister – her aunt, has been reading the posts and has started communicating with our daughter about her deep desire to visit “The Great White North” which is a country that we really don’t really hear all that much about. I have never been there myself and don’t know all that much about Canada, which is really weird when you think about it considering that it is right above us here in the good old U.S. of A.

Anyway, my sister is telling her that she will start looking for cheap flights so that they might be able to take a trip together next summer, since my sister loves to travel and has always wanted to get closer to her youngest niece and this just might be the ticket (excuse the pun) to do just that. You just can’t imagine how excited our daughter has become at the thought of actually flying on an airplane (something that she has never experienced) and having the opportunity to go to her beloved Canada.

My sister knows a lot of people all over the world and has made so many connections along the way that she usually gets what she wants, when she wants it and how she wants it. It is very true in that it is all in who you are related to and who you know. Apparently she knows someone that works for Alaska Airlines which has flights in the U.S. as well as Canada, so she is going to start doing the legwork immediately and hopefully have things lined up in time for when she comes to visit over the holidays to share with us to see what we all think about what she has planned. It’s good to see our daughter so excited about something. She is a very serious, quite teenager that pretty much stays to herself and keeps calm, so it does our heart good to see her so excited at the prospect of having her dream come true. The only thing that worries me is that by the time next summer comes along she just might be done with Canada and moved on to somewhere else!

A Blast From The Past

Today’s online education is a great option for many people these days, as the sky is the limit when it comes to furthering ones education. The Internet has made it possible for anyone with access to a computer to “learn from near or afar”.

I received an unexpected but very nice email from a young women that I was getting a bit too serious with back in the 90′s, who has since relocated out west and has decided to study online for organizational leadership jobs, something that I wouldn’t have thought she had any interest in back in our day. But that was some time back and people do change in various interesting ways. She found me and my email on Facebook a few weeks ago.

She sounds happy and is keeping busy by working full time and furthering her education. She sent me the link to the organizational leadership masters degree courses that she is currently involved with. I must admit that I had not heard of this particular online learning establishment, but then again I’m not surprised, being as I have never been involved with online education. But I did take a look around their site and it sounds like a great opportunity for people studying for their masters degree in organizational leadership and taking these classes online provides the flexibility that people need these days that keep us so very busy.

I’m glad to hear that she is doing something positive with her life and that she is not married with a boat load of rug rats running around with their snotty little noses and dirty diapers, that means that there is a good chance that she hasn’t lost that cute little figure of hers that I remember oh so well. I wish that she had sent a updated photo of herself. Not that I don’t believe her or anything, just would like to know what I’m missing is all. Maybe I’ll ask her to do so in one of her future emails, that is if she can squeeze in the time to keep in touch with this old man with a lot of memories that he holds in this head of his!

I’m so glad that I finally consented to opening an account on Facebook. It didn’t take long to figure it all out and it really has helped reconnect with so many people all over the world that I probably would have never seen or heard from again.

Dr Seuss and I

Dr. Seuss was always one of my favorites as a kid. You can imagine how excited I was when I found out that we shared the same birthday! As an adult I still enjoyed reading his numerous books to my kids when they were still little and really got into me reading to them and whenever one of his movies come out you can bet that we are there on the first night that it comes to our local theater.

Today on Facebook someone posted this quote of his and Ijust couldn’t resist sharing it on my Facebook Wall as well as here on my blog today.
